In her TEDxSFU talk, Blind Sighted, Anne takes viewers on a 17-minute journey, sharing her inspirational and courageous journey of growing up in two different cultures and not feeling a sense of belonging in either. Moreover, Anne articulates coming to terms with chronic illness while reflecting on her Asian identity and vision loss.

A Personal Connection

Even though Anne knew from her childhood that “something wasn’t quite right” with her eyes, the optometrists were unable to figure out what the problem was. After 8 years of back and forths and continuously worrying about her sanity, Anne was diagnosed with cone rod dystrophy, a rare inherited disease that slowly erases the light-sensing cells of the retina. Cones, responsible for color and central vision, are fading first, followed by the rods which are responsible for night vision and peripheral vision. Since then Anne has taken proactive measures to train and navigate life with vision loss.

Does fashion and being stylish have to be different when you’re blind or visually impaired?
For me, as a blind woman – absolutely not!
Clothes and fashion are a way to express ourselves and just because I am blind doesn’t mean that I don’t care how I look or feel. I want to be able to dress myself and still be fashionable.
Are there adaptive fashion options for the blind and visually impaired community? Keep reading to find out more!
